Water puppets, Hanoi

After visiting the circus in Cambodia and the ballet in Laos we decided to try another ‘traditional’ art show in Vietnam.
Vietnam is famous for the ancient practice of water puppetry. The stories are based on the rice farmers from Northern Vietnam who worked in the flooded fields, hence the water!
There are about 400 different short stories or ‘scenes’ which are acted out by wooden puppets. The performers which control each puppet is supposed to have a minimum of 3 years to take part in these shows, so clearly a hard skill to master!
Here in Hanoi performances occur about 4 times a day, every day- so no excuse you don’t have time! And for only 40 minutes the performance is really a bit of fun, especially the fire breathing dragons!
