Blue lagoon and Elephant cave, Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is one of those places that organised tours are a must do…and they are very reasonably priced.

One of the most popular sites, which can be accessed by yourself is the blue lagoon (Tham Phu Kham). To get to it from Vang Vieng centre a bumpy 7 km route is taken by tuk tuk, bike, scooter or foot. Here the large lagoon is a beautiful green- blue water, perfect to dip into…even though it is freezing! You can also visit a cave which contains a reclining Buddha, but this involves a 200m hike through a forest!

A popular tour route often involves the Tham Sang triangle, starting with a trip to the Tham Sang cave also called Elephant cave. It is clear why it is called this, by a stalactite which clearly resembles an elephant!

From here you walk through paddy fields and villages to a serious of caves, where it is possible to go caving in these small limestone caverns. Unfortunately the chance to get photos isn’t that easy as the route involves using hands and knees and even army crawling through routes. But inside there are spiders, bats and stalactites.
