Mashomack National Park

This park covers about 1/3 of Shelter Island, so really one not too miss. Free parking allows anyone to enter and take part in 1 of their 4 different walking trails. The shortest one takes 30 minutes- which is a bit of an exaggeration as it is rather short. But for the more trekking type of people the longest route apparently can take around 4.5 hours!! (I didn’t do this).

The walks cover areas of untouched land at its best-marshland, forests and moors all containing its natural flora and fauna. Planning a small walk at the beginning or end of your trip at Shelter Island is the thing to do. Just bring some trainers and water bottle and you will fit right in! Keep an eye out for ospreys, deers and butterflies which are the main wildlife in the preserve.
