Basic white bread

As you can probably tell, I do have a bit of a thing for desserts and sweet things! But to be honest I love making everything, especially homemade bread. Once I conquered the basic technique any recipe is possibly. Just by understanding how bread works I haven’t stopped baking my own. Definitely not going back to the supermarket sliced bread!!

Starting with the basics-a good white bread- you can’t over estimate the beauty of simplicity. Combining 3 ingredients; flour, yeast and water (as well as oil, sugar and salt- for taste)..homemade bread is just a couple of ‘rising’ hours away.

There is nothing like the smell of bread baking in the oven, let alone the taste. Once made your first batch there will be no going back to commercial sliced bread.

250g strong plain white flour
1 tsp salt
Pinch sugar
7g fast-action yeast
4 1/2 tbsp olive oil
150-160ml warm water

In a mixer, combine flour, salt, oil and sugar

Whisk the water with yeast and pour into the bowl of flour, while whisking at the same time

Beat together until smooth, about 5 minutes. Alternatively knead by hand for about 10 minutes

Shape into a ball, cover with oiled clingfilm and leave to rise on an oiled baking sheet until doubled in size

When nearly ready to bake, preheat the oven to 200oC/gas mark 6

Lightly oil the bread surface, then add to the oven for 20 minutes

Finish off with a layer of caramelised onions….if you fancy!
